This is also my first time posting to reddit, so if this isn't the right place to post this or there are better places to ask, please do redirect me to those places (or people I guess? ). But anyway some background info, I live in Canada, and I've had my A71 for about 6ish months, that's about it really. So on Sunday (March 14th) I received a notification that a new software update was ready to be installed. Seeing as I had nothing to do on my phone at 1am (was gaming already), I decided to quickly clear out my notifications (basically checking Twitter), then proceed with the update. When I tapped on the install button and "read" the update notes, I noticed there was something off about it. Specifically there was a bunch of -insert text here- . Don't know what they're specifically called (not coming to mind), I know what they're for (on Steam at least lol), it wasn't just one line, it was quite a few. But I didn't think much of it, probably just wasn't fully loaded, whatever, install update, back to gaming.

I'm now basically stuck with erasing app data and MAYBE (but not guaranteed) being able to start up in safe mode, factory reset (assuming the OS isn't broken to the point where it needs to be uninstalled and a fresh copy reinstalled), take it to proper data recovery specialists just to get some stuff back, or send it back to Samsung, who probably won't waste the time trying to recover the few important photos, and will just install a fresh copy of the OS or something. As of this post, my phone hasn't really changed. I tried deleting app data and booting into safe mode, they said it MAY work, but that's not a guarantee. It MAY work. In my case, it didn't work unsurprisingly. I did manage to finally get into the proper Android Recovery screen that gives me the option to wipe cache partitions and so on. I tried that, nothing happened. I'm not tech smart enough to really try updating through an SD card or ADB or any of the other options, I've yet to try Factory Reset and obviously not willing to do that just yet.

There is one more Samsung Service Centre I've yet to visit, I'll probably visit soon but it'll be a good while till then. But I have a feeling it'll get me nowhere so my question is, am I shit out of luck? Would visiting data recovery specialists void my warranty? I've seen some programs that supposedly can recover data after a factory reset. Has anyone tried those? What is recommended? I'm just not sure what to do anymore. App data, whatever, I can accept those losses. Some of the pics lost, whatever, acceptable losses. But the small handful of pictures that actually matter to me, I am unwilling to lose those. I didn't think a single update would brick my phone this badly. I don't even truly know if the update was at fault, my own device, or it was me that unintentionally caused all of this. If it was a computer, believe me, I've gone through this before. But this hits different. I could probably go on without touching the phone for a bit longer (in case I want to take it to data recovery or something) but this is my only phone at the moment, if its getting sent back to Samsung, it probably won't be back anytime soon and chances are, my data might get wiped.

So I navigated Samsung's site and found the Authorized Service Centre section. I found one not far from me. Sadly it was still Sunday, and they were closed, but I was still able to get in contact with the service centre and basically they concluded that the update must've broken something, whether it was the update itself that broke it, or something happened during the update, up to speculation but so far it seemed to be the update that bricked my phone. Guess I'll go after work the next day and just let my batteries drain for the time being since it can't actually power off. I get off work the next day, was going to bring it to Service Centre, was told by my mom that a friend I knew in school who got me the phone (works at cellphone provider) might be able to fix it. Alright I guess we'll head there first. Gave him the phone, explained everything I explained to the Samsung agent and repair shop. Same conclusion, must've been the update. In a nutshell, I left the phone with him for the night and he'll try to see what he can do.
